'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony

Justin and I visited the downtown campus of Fellowship Church on Sunday. The downtown campus had been meeting in a school and opened a new building two weeks ago. We had seen the downtown campus and heard good things about the church as a whole. Fellowship is a huge church in Grapevine (which is between Dallas and Fort Worth). They have four satellite churches around the metroplex that watch the pastor on big screens and then have their own Sunday school/life groups/VBS/etc. Justin and I assumed that the service would be your normal, slightly contemporary, service with praise choruses.

Boy were we wrong! As we walked in, we noticed that everyone was dressed really causal like shorts and jeans. But Justin said he had heard that the pastor wears jeans to preach. As the service began, the lights went out and a full band (we're talking real rock band complete with the glass wall in front of the drummer) began to play the Verve's Bittersweet Symphony. This was followed by Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb. As the songs played, the screens showed moving colored lights like on the computer. At this point, I thought this has to do with the message. Which at least one did as the message addressed being comfortably numb in your Christian life. However, after the message (the only good part of the service) the band played two more songs. One actually mentioned God although I had never heard it and you couldn't really sing along.

Then they did announcements just like a regular church and the service was over. I have to think that this service was tailored for the downtown crowd and that the other campuses had different services but with the same message. Justin said he knows normal people that used to go to his church that now attend the Grapevine Fellowship. In conclusion, I would not recommend attending the downtown Fellowship Church. However, if anyone wants to go to another campus and let me know if it is the same, that would be great. I am just so curious!

I really happen to like the Bittersweet Symphony. I can't imagine hearing it in church though. I would recomend going back to a Christian church!

I would be pretty weirded out with a pastor who wears jeans to preach and secular songs in church. Not that Dad doesn't wear jeans to church all the time but.... wait... :) That's crazy!

I never did like that devil music anyway. Thanks for the warning!

Even if they can make a good point with secular pop music in the service, it will have distracted their minds and tied them back into their daily routines. What's next? The Rolling Stones singing Sympathy For the Devil?

Sounds kinda creepy/weird. I recommend finding another church.

I went to that church once. OK I never actually even went in, I heard the rock music in the parking lot and went somewhere else. My cousin, Michelle used to go there and she sd it has really taken a turn for the worst now. We have been going to First Baptist Hurst. We do enjoy it but not sure if we want to join yet.

Hi, Lindsay! and Justin! I read this...how long ago was it? Well, anyway, finding the right church is hard, but a very important thing to do. keep praying, because God knows just where He wants you to go, and will lead you there. And when He does, you'll know it, too!
We love you, and are praying for you. COG
